Day 12 - Cologne to Koblenz

The ride

The weather gods were not clement today - we had lots and lots of torrential rain. Instead of getting up really early in the morning and riding all the way by bike, I spent some more time with family and then took a train down to Neuwied. OV to Koblenz is really quite short. It’s about 25 kilometres, which took me a bit over an hour. I was quite lucky as in that hour there was basically no rain, but some quite strong winds. So overall not nearly as long as some of the other days, but quite exhausing.

The hotel

So even after only 25 kilometres, I arrived at the hotel somewhat tired. The hotel for the night is the Fährhaus in Koblenz. It has been strongly recommended to me by a friend who comes from this area. It is situated directly at the Moselle and has beautiful views of the water and the vineyards.

Dinner was then at the restaurant downstairs. I also have a fine dining option, but it was closed today, and I didn’t feel like having more fine dining anyways. Overall, the food was very good, very well prepared, beautifully arranged, and super tasty. As it is still white asparagus time, I had to choose some asparagus dishes, so I had a very nice asparagus salad in the beginning, followed by an asparagus soup.

asparagus

The main was a beef filet on green asparagus with an outstanding hollandaise, the first Eierschwammerln (chanterelles) of the season (for me), and Gnocchi.

And, because I hadn’t had food since breakfast, I had the tiramisu with strawberries as well.

For wine, I chose by the glass options which were very well balanced local German wines.
